Wonderful reference.
The inside, as promised, was in pristine condition except for a name and stamp on the inside front cover and first page. The seller indicated that the cover may show some wear, and I found the corners and tips of the spine to be damaged with smaller punctures on the front and back. There's a sticker on the back that I can't remove cleanly, too, which was not indicated. I am disappointed that the damage to the spine will need to be repaired as I was looking for a usable book as-is, but it seems reasonable to classify this as "good condition" based on the structural integrity and flawlessness of the inside pages.
Very good guide for those who wanted to understand the theoretical basis behind X-ray crystallography
The book of Stout and Jensen (2-nd edition, 1989) is, in my opinion, the best introduction to X-ray structure determination (of small molecule crystals) written so far. Why? Because it is clearly written while keeping in mind many practical aspects without, however, neglecting the theoretical foundations. The book is organized in three parts and 19 chapters along with five appendices. The most modern (post 1980s) instrumentation (image plate, CCD, etc.) is not covered but this is not a problem, I think, for the necessary information can easily be obtained either from manuals or the internet. Those that are interested in protein crystallography should consult specialized books such as Drenth's Principles of Protein X-Ray Crystallography or Rupp's Biomolecular Crystallography: Principles, Practice, and Application to Structural Biology. A slightly more advanced treatment of X-ray analysis can be found in Dunitz's book X-Ray Analysis and the Structure of Organic Molecules (the corrected reprint of the 1979 edition was published in 1996).
This book is an excellent excellent introction to the basic physics and math of x-ray crystallography. This was used as the text in an undergrad class I took on protein crystallography and it was perfect for that purpose. The main drawback of this book is that it is really concentrated on small molecule structure determination, and doesn't address the problems or specific techniques used for large protein structures. So probably the best way to use this book would be in conjuction with a more protein-specific book. But for the raw fundamentals of symmetry and diffraction, I don't think you can beat stout & jensen.
With many good graphics, this book explains it all. From the beginning (generation and diffraction of X-rays) to the end (errors and ambiguities of the method), almost everything you ever wanted to know (and more) about the method of X-ray structure determination is explained here.The approach Stout and Jensen take is a rather theoretical and mathematical one, which does not cater to everybody's preferences. I personally prefer Carmelo Giacovazzo's Fundamentals of Crystallography, but the Stout and Jensen certainly is a classic and a whole generation (and a half) of crystallographers was raised on it.Unfortunately the book is a little outdated and more recent developments like area detectors are not mentioned. The part on structure refinement is interesting (especially the section on scaling) but hopelessly incomplete. For practical structure refinement go with Peter Mueller's Crystal Structure Refinement -- A Crystallographer's Guide to SHELXL.
